Pitches lower than 4 12 have a slight angle and they are defined as low slope roofs.

The rules can occasionally be broken but generally you should not exceed the low range of the recommendation. A common house roof pitch is 5 by 12 which means it slopes up from the wall at 5 inches per foot. The form of a roof tells something of the region and its climate local building traditions and even architectural style. To measure the roof pitch you ll need an 18 or 24 inch level a tape measure and a pencil.

Premade trusses will form the skeleton of your new roof above your old roof. Obviously the amount of maintenance required varies depending on the complexity of the roof and how the structure is exposed to the elements. The most commonly used roof pitches fall in a range between 4 12 and 9 12. How long will it take to raise your roof.

On average a roof raising project takes four to six weeks from start to finish. For example wood and slate shingles might work for roofs steeper than the top recommendation of 12 12 but you should not install them below the 4 12 lower range.
